MEDITATIONS
Sitali
Sitali, also known as the Cooling Breath, is a pranayama (breath control) technique that has a cooling and calming effect on both the body and the mind. This practice is particularly useful for reducing feelings of anger, frustration, and overheating, whether caused by physical exertion or emotional stress. By drawing in cool air through the tongue and exhaling through the nose, Sitali helps regulate body temperature and soothe mental agitation, promoting a state of relaxation and calm.
Instructions:
- Find a Comfortable Sitting Position: Sit in a relaxed but upright position, either cross-legged on the floor or in a chair with your feet planted on the ground. Ensure your spine is straight, and your shoulders are relaxed. Close your eyes to help focus your attention inward.
- Roll Your Tongue Into a Tube Shape: Extend your tongue and roll the sides upward to form a tube-like shape. Not everyone can roll their tongue naturally, so if you’re unable to do so, simply purse your lips as though sipping through a strawāthis creates a similar cooling effect.
- Inhale Through the Rolled Tongue: Slowly inhale deeply through your rolled tongue or pursed lips, feeling the cool air enter your mouth. As you breathe in, focus on the sensation of cooling air flowing into your body. This breath should feel refreshing and soothing, helping to calm both physical heat and emotional tension.
- Close Your Mouth and Exhale Through Your Nose: After inhaling through the tongue, close your mouth gently and exhale slowly through your nose. Allow your breath to flow out smoothly and naturally, releasing any tension or heat as you exhale.
- Continue for 5ā10 Minutes: Repeat this cycle of breathing for 5 to 10 minutes or longer, depending on your comfort level and needs. With each breath, notice how the cool air refreshes your body and calms your mind. As you settle into the rhythm of this pranayama, you may feel both physical and emotional heat dissipate.
Benefits:
Cools Body Temperature: Sitali breath is particularly effective at lowering body temperature, making it ideal for cooling down after exercise, during hot weather, or when experiencing heat-related discomfort. The technique can also be used during times of heightened emotions, such as anger or frustration, which may cause a rise in body heat.
Calms the Mind and Reduces Anger: By focusing on slow, cooling breaths, Sitali helps quiet the mind and release negative emotions like anger and frustration. The cooling effect of the breath can bring a sense of peace and emotional balance, making it easier to manage stress and avoid reactive outbursts.
Promotes Relaxation and Stress Relief: Sitali engages the parasympathetic nervous system, which triggers the bodyās relaxation response. As the cooling breath slows the heart rate and promotes calm, it helps alleviate stress and tension, leaving you feeling more relaxed and at ease.
Helps Alleviate Tension and Heat-Related Discomfort: Sitali is useful for relieving physical tension and discomfort caused by heat, such as headaches, dizziness, or feelings of fatigue from overexertion or hot weather. The cooling effect of the breath can soothe the body, promoting a sense of relief and comfort.

Sitali (Cooling Breath) Meditation is a powerful tool for reducing physical and emotional heat. Whether you’re feeling overheated from physical activity or experiencing intense emotions like anger, this pranayama technique helps cool the body, calm the mind, and promote relaxation.
